Guitar Tabloid, Week ending Friday 16 October 2026: The four-million-dollar dollar; A year in the planning, a day's notice; Dumble is back, and you still can't afford one

Headlines

The four-million-dollar dollar

Gibson won $1 in damages at the retrial, and Dean's owner Armadillo has been ordered to pay the $4 million it cost Gibson to win it, with Dean already in Chapter 11.1

From KDH’s video “They Discontinued Every Guitar”

A year in the planning, a day's notice

Emerald Guitars discontinued every model on 14 October with no last-chance orders, in a reset founder Alistair says he decided on a year ago, and launched a cheaper carbon line, Noir, at $1,495.2

Dumble is back, and you still can't afford one

Dumble is taking orders again, without Alexander Dumble, who died in 2022, and there are no prices on the website; you have to ask. Ola Englund has still never played a real one and blames Mark Tremonti for hogging them.3

From Tone Nerds’s video “JHS Wanderer Is Here, Fender American Series News, and Is NAM Changing the Game?”
Picture: Tone Nerds

Fender stops counting, so buyers will have to

Fender has dropped the numbers from its American Professional line, so there will be no Professional III, and Tone Nerds point out that anyone buying one used will need its year to know its specs, at around the same $1,800.4

Picture: Phillip McKnight

McKnight's pickups get cheaper the moment he stops making them

Phillip McKnight has handed his Northern Lights pickups from his own Blackstock brand to DiMarzio, which still makes them in the USA, in New York, for about 45% less.5

Consensus watch

  • NAM: Glenn Fricker declared the Axe-Fx, Kemper and Quad Cortex obliterated, in a video labelled as paid promotion, Tone Nerds asked whether the market is already saturated, and Cordy named NAM a bigger threat to the guitar industry than Fender, then put a £45 NAM box up against a £2,500 Axe-Fx and found, partly to his surprise, that the £45 box doesn't sound as good. The £2,455 price difference may have been a clue. (SpectreSoundStudios, Tone Nerds, John Nathan Cordy)6

Who's Beefin'

Danny Sapko vs Quentin Tarantino and Kurt Russell

Heat: 3/5

Kurt Russell smashed a 145-year-old Martin in The Hateful Eight, and for eleven years it was blamed on a mix-up with the props. Danny Sapko reports an ex-Martin employee's claim, via Guitar World, that Tarantino left the real one in on purpose to get a genuine reaction from Jennifer Jason Leigh, though how she would tell it from six props mid-swing is not explained. Russell, apparently, doesn't care. Danny invited viewers to agree on what the pair are; his word for it does not appear in this newspaper. The Martin did not get a second take.7

The Tab says

This was the week of the price tag. Gibson won a dollar and billed Dean four million dollars to collect it. Emerald launched a guitar for people who can't afford an Emerald. Dumble will tell you its prices if you ask, which tells you its prices. Blindfolded, Pete at Andertons preferred an Epiphone to his own Gibson, and Charles Berthoud confessed to pricing his bass lines at $10 a song.

Underneath it all ran NAM. Glenn Fricker and Cordy spent the week on a free amp modeller that learns an amp by training a neural network on it. That's machine learning, and guitar YouTube loves it when it's in a box, but not when it's called AI. In the same week, Taylor Momsen told Rick Beato "I hate an algorithm."

A cake recipe is an algorithm. Relax.

Old Man Yells at Cloud

The cloud is currently composed of 45% algorithm resentment, 35% phones at gigs and 20% guitar players.8

Rick did not yell this week. He sat across from Taylor Momsen for over an hour while she discussed touring with AC/DC and Soundgarden and her new album, Dear God, and let her do it for him.9

The guest in the chair. On Rick's show, an hour in, Momsen turned on the system that recommends Rick's show. "I hate an algorithm. I hate an algorithm... Don't tell me what to like." She said it twice, in case the algorithm missed it the first time. She also ruled that music has become "the background music to the individual's life... It's not the star of the show anymore."10

The phones. Five minutes later, still on Rick's show, she moved on to the audience: "I've never played a show where someone hasn't filmed it... You're trying to preserve a moment that you haven't even experienced, because you're busy preserving it before you've seen it." She said this to a camera.11

Rick's nearest approach. In "Did Hollywood Copy THIS Video?", Rick set a scene from the film Tuner beside his 2015 viral video with Dylan and found it "essentially a recreation". He plans to see the film anyway. He then explained that perfect pitch can't be learned but relative pitch can, with his ear training program. "This isn't a pitch for it." The pinned comment under the video is. He did not, at any point this week, go back as far as Shinedown.12

The Creator Desk

Danny Sapko

  • Danny opened with: "Only three days ago, I put up a video saying how much I hate musicians smashing up their instruments." Then came the Hateful Eight Martin.13
  • He is also paying to repair the bass a viewer, Cash, had damaged on a flight to Cape Town, which is the other approach. "A dipstick in need is a dipstick indeed."14
  • His NOPE bass raffle has closed, and Daily Guitar Draw is counting what it raised for this month's charity, Punk for the Homeless. One "unlucky winner" gets the bass.15

TheGuitarGeek

  • At Guitar Summit, Ibanez showed a brick-built RG550 made with BRICS of Berlin. It has pad-printed graphics, no stickers, and a miniature brick-built Tube Screamer.16
  • Henry's Guitars showed a short-scale bass series called Cats, with pickups called Meow.17

John Nathan Cordy

  • On 10 October he defended PRS against the charge of having no soul, calling it "a bit of a basic thing". On 15 October, after a month of Telecasters: "Telecasters are better than PRS is my conclusion." The tonewood debate now has a sequel, soulwood.18
  • "I Had NO IDEA A Fender Hot Rod Deluxe Could Sound Like This" turned out to be a Hot Rod Deluxe, turned up into a load box, sounding like a Hot Rod Deluxe.19
  • "I was SO WRONG - the WORST THING That Can Happen to a GUITARIST Live" was about Stevie Wonder losing the plot mid-harmonica solo and telling the crowd "I didn't practice that tune. I will do better." They loved it. The worst thing that happened to Cordy was the three-hour drive from Exeter to Taunton.20

SpectreSoundStudios

  • Glenn Fricker pitted the $499 HeadRush Flex Prime, which now runs NAM captures free, against the $1,799 Quad Cortex, which doesn't run NAM at all and used its own captures of the same amps. They came out "pretty damn close", until a 14-decibel gap appeared that Glenn admits he can't explain. He named the Flex Prime "the box to beat", and HeadRush sponsored the video. We believe him. Like the 14 decibels, the sponsorship came through loud and clear.21
  • Guitar players, he says, "will always find something to bitch about, because that is still way easier than writing a song". Then the live test: 122 decibels, which he notes "is not bedroom practice loud". That rules out most of his audience's gigs.22

60 Cycle Hum

  • On 12 October Ryan Burke said "pedals, believe it or not, are pretty niche". Three days later he posted a 42-minute paid demo of the Cosmodio Horoscope, a delay and reverb offering "perfect Pythagorean intervals", "microtonally subtle" scales and "genetic mutation". He has a point.23
  • In "Lefties deserve more guitars", Ryan and friends tried playing left-handed at Sweetwater, and soon noticed they were "talking more now because we don't want to try playing left-handed anymore." Lefties deserve more guitars. They got left-handed Wonderwall.24

KDH

  • Alongside the reset, Emerald launched Noir, a stripped-back carbon fibre sub-brand at $1,495, against around $2,500 for the main line. It comes in "black and only black", which suits a company that kept its customers in the dark for a year. KDH preferred it, because "I'm not petrified of doing something wrong with the Noir".25

Bradley Hall

  • Bradley Hall weighed in on James Hetfield's Las Vegas speech. He called it "a little bit naive" and "not the most tactful move in the world", but also "pretty inoffensive", and said getting "riled up about this is a bit much". He delivered his verdict over spaghetti hoops, "a nice ringular alternative to beans". The internet came for Hetfield with pitchforks; Bradley struggled with a fork-fork.26

The Guitologist

The Guitologist found microphonic pickups in a Venus Guitars Revolution, and worked with owner Ron to trace the cause to the metal bezels. Venus is cutting $200 off the 150 remaining guitars with the old pickups. Rarely has feedback saved anyone $200.27

Andertons Music Co

  • Will Putney's signature Cyclops has an Electro-Harmonix Pitchfork built into the body, for anyone who wants to join the Hetfield backlash without putting the guitar down.28
  • Lee and Pete put seven budget single cuts head to head, then played the two finalists to a blindfolded Pete against his own Gibson Les Paul. Of the last one, Pete said: "I want the last one to be my Gibson, but I don't think it is." He was right. It was the Epiphone.29

The Trogly's Guitar Show

  • Gibson's Mod Collection this week offered a 4,700-euro "shimmering raspberry cheesecake" Les Paul Custom and a Not-So-Mellow Yellow Explorer that reminded Trogly of Laffy Taffy. He called the Explorer "probably the ugliest one this week", and endearing anyway.30
  • The week Dean was ordered to pay Gibson's $4 million legal bill, Gibson's unofficial newsroom unboxed a Dean, and called it the "Holy Grail".31

Sonic Drive Studio

  • "Dave Friedman ROASTS my amp collection!" ran 35 minutes, in which "cool" was said 43 times. The roast peaked at rectifiers: "Not my thing, though." Jon has four.32

Davie504

Davie504 bought a Fodera because "I thought buying a ridiculously expensive instrument would somehow transfer his abilities into my hands", then attempted five Victor Wooten bass lines that viewers said he wasn't worthy of playing. His verdict: "they might be right." The Fodera is now being raffled, abilities not included.33

Charles Berthoud

Charles Berthoud has secretly played bass on more than 1,000 songs, starting at "$10 per song". His new course, The Bassline Blueprint, costs $150, so graduates need only 15 secret songs to earn it back. It was half price until 18 October, the day after this paper came out, which is how close its editor likes to cut things.34

Riffs, Beards & Gear

Fluff bought a 45-year-old Les Paul Standard because, "pretty beat up but doing okay", it "reminds me of myself". It has since had new pickups, new wiring and a new bridge, which at 45 is called a midlife crisis.35

Rob Chapman

Rob Chapman visited his friend Rusty in California to look at a heavily modified Ibanez RG550. It was the week's second-most rebuilt RG550, because Ibanez released one made of bricks.36

Sean Daniel

Sean Daniel finally tried an Orange amp, and found it "super loud". He also discovered that "if you actually turn the volume down, it actually isn't really that loud at all."37
